How much online backup space do I need?

The best way to determine this is to simply select the folders on your system which you feel are the most crucial and then view the “Size on Disk” space for each. An example of folders to check might be “My Documents”, specific “Program” data folders and any other data folders. Simply, add up the sizes and this will provide a “rough” idea of the required storage space. You can then pick the backup plan that is appropriate for you.

How long are my backup files retained?

Your online backup files are retained for as long as you keep your account current. Expiration of the files depends on retention policies. This retention can be set per backup task and even on file level. With retention of 30 days a file removed on-premise will automatically be cleaned from the backup after 30 days. All files in any account which is discontinued due to either billing issues or voluntary cancellation on the customer’s behalf will be deleted from our online backup servers.

Are my backed up data files private?

Yes, upon installing the BMIT Cloud Backup application, you will be required to enter an encryption key. This key is ONLY known by you. Without this encryption key, your data cannot be recovered by you, anyone else nor by BMIT.

How does your service work if I have multiple PCs to backup?

This is not a problem. You would simply have a separate license (backup client) for each PC that you are planning to backup online with us.

What if my PC or laptop crashes?

In the event of a severe computer failure, you would simply repair and/or replace the PC in question and then download and re-install the backup client software. Then it is simply a matter of restoring the backed up data files back to your PC. You may also use your web browser to access your files utilizing the web-based BMIT Cloud Backup interface.

Is there any other way of restoring data apart from BMIT Cloud Backup software?

Yes, you can also restore your data through your your web browser by utilizing the web-based BMIT Cloud Backup interface.

How fast are my files transferred back and forth?

This all depends on your actual internet connection speed. It is important to note that a typical DSL internet connection will yield a faster “download” speed and a slower “upload” speed. We have a dedicated Gigabit fiber connection to the internet. We do not throttle file transfer rates to our online backup servers.

Does your backup client software impact my PC?

The BMIT Cloud Backup software client has been designed to have a minimal impact on your PCs performance. In most situations, you will not even notice that the backup client is even running as it runs as a service in the background.

What if I only have a “dialup” internet connection available?

We are sorry, but we cannot support operation over a dial-up internet connection. The connection speed is simply too slow to accommodate the typically large files which would be backed up online.

Can I choose to backup the files on my PC manually at any given time?

Yes, you can manually have the BMIT Cloud Backup software client initiate a backup session, as long as you have an internet connection available.

How secure are my backup and restore sessions?

The data that you back up to or restore from our online storage servers is secure. BMIT Cloud Backup uses AES 256-bit encryption when your data is at rest in the Cloud. The connection to and from our online backup servers is secure using SSL & SOAP message signing. This in conjunction with your own private encryption key, you can be certain that your data files are strictly secure and confidential.

Is it possible to perform an “off-line” backup and / or restore session with BMIT Cloud Backup?

If you have a storage media in your office, you can use the local backup option to save data to your SAN/NAS if you are connected to your local network.

Is my personal information private?

Absolutely, BMIT Cloud Backup will never sell or divulge any of your personal information to any third parties.

What happens in the middle of a backup session with a lost connection?

In the unlikely event that your internet connection is lost, the backup software client will notify you that the backup session failed and then once an internet connection is re-established, the backup session would commence from where it had left off prior to the loss of the internet connection.

Will the files on my PC automatically be backed up?

Yes, as long as your PC is switched on and there is a broadband internet connection, and you have a scheduled backup task set up, the BMIT Cloud Backup software client will automatically initiate backup sessions with the configuration you set-up.

Do I have to turn off my MS SQL Server when I make a backup?

No, a MS SQL Server is constantly operational. BMIT Cloud Backup can make a backup of the SQL database without interrupting the operational processes, even during the backup window.

Are the backups of MS SQL Server Instances incremental?

Yes, the backups of MS SQL Server Instances are incremental. After an initial, complete backup of the Instances, only the log file of the Instances are updated on the Backup Server in the data center. This means that the software is still capable of making a backup of MS SQL Servers of 100 GB, for example, with a very limited Internet connection. In addition, the compression of the backup of MS SQL Server is often very effective.

How do I restore an MS SQL Server Instances?

Restoring an MS SQL Server Instances using BMIT Cloud Backup Client is very easy. In the event you lose an Instance, you can select ‘Restore Data’ for the relevant Instance and click ‘Restore’. You can then overwrite the original database or create a copy of the Instance.

How does BMIT Cloud Backup Client verify whether my MS SQL Server is complete and accurate?

Client performs a very reliable and extensive check of the backups of Instances to avoid the loss of data. For example, Client verifies whether the most recent complete backups and related log file concur. If this is not the case, no consistent restore can be guaranteed and a complete backup of the Instance will be performed.

Software Updates

How will I know when a software update is available? 

If you have selected the option ‘Always install a new version when available’, the software will be updated automatically when BMIT Cloud Backup is started.

If you have not selected this option, when BMIT Cloud Backup starts, you will receive a message stating ‘A new version of BMIT Cloud Backup is available. Would you like to upgrade?’ Click ‘Yes’ to install the new version. If you click ‘No’ (not advised), the message will appear each time you start BMIT Cloud Backup software.

How do I perform a software update?
